The series were inspired by Piers Anthony's fiction books Chthon and Phthor. It was Rezo Kaishauri's first serious attempt in fantasy illustrating, called "the greatest failure of all time" by the author himself. Still, the dark green setting of the books gave the series an appreciable integrity in style.
A year later Rezo, discontented with the results, created a new series of illustrations, called The Passion for Chthon.
